System Integration Engineer

Company Snapshot

We are transforming analog manufacturing into digital.

Quantica is a venture-backed additive manufacturing technology company pioneering breakthrough printhead innovation. We've developed proprietary high-viscosity jetting technology in-house that enables professionals to print with functional materials previously considered impossible.

What sets us apart:

  • Proprietary high-viscosity printhead technology (NovoJet™) - fully developed and realized in-house
  • Integrated 2D/3D printing platform purpose-built for our technology
  • 50+ talented professionals across multidisciplinary teams
  • International presence with offices in Berlin (HQ) and Barcelona
  • Well-funded through strategic VC partnerships

Our team spans printhead engineering, materials science, physics, mechanical and electronic engineering, software development, systems engineering, and commercial operations. With colleagues from five continents, English is our working language.

About the Role:

Location: Sant Cugat del Vallès, Barcelona, Spain (English-speaking environment)

Work Split: 60-70% Hands-on Lab | 20-30% Team Collaboration | Up to 20% Travel (Berlin / Customer sites)

We're hiring a System Integration Engineer who will play a central role in the integration and optimisation of Quantica's NovoJet printhead and printing systems to jet a wide range of advanced materials reliably. You will own printing and material integration end to end, from feasibility through parameter tuning and system configuration to reliability validation. You will work at the system level across the full print engine: fluidics, control software, telemetry, and the printhead driver electronics.

This is a hands-on role, with mostly onsite presence in our office in Sant Cugat del Vallès (Barcelona). You will spend most of your time in the lab and you are expected to be comfortable across the whole integrated system rather than a single sub-domain. The printhead, electronics, and firmware are developed in-house and with our technology partners. You can influence those teams for deep sub-domain work. What matters is that you can configure, interpret, and coordinate around the integrated system to get materials jetting reliably.

The position bridges laboratory experimentation, system configuration, process tuning, and field integration, with close teamwork with customers, material partners, our electronics partner, and internal development teams.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Requirements & Feasibility
    • Capture jetting, process, and print-quality requirements with partners and customers, and translate them into testable system requirements.
    • Run both customer-led and internal feasibility studies: assess whether a material can circulate and jet in the printing system, and characterise its operating envelope (thermal window, viscosity behaviour, material - component compatibility).
    • Document experimental results and establish initial process baselines.

  • System & Parameter Integration
    • Configure and integrate the full NovoJet system (fluidics, control electronics, printheads and relevant subsystems).
    • Define, implement, and tune all necessary process parameters, and establish repeatable calibration and operation procedures for specific material setups.
    • Work fluently with the cell's control software and high-volume telemetry: process and interpret the telemetry streams (pressure, temperature, flow) computationally to characterise and diagnose system behaviour, and configure operating parameters accordingly.

  • Implementation Planning & Coordination
    • Translate feasibility outcomes into actionable implementation plans for engineering, manufacturing, and software teams.
    • Define interface requirements between the mechanical, fluidic, electrical, and control subsystems of the printing system and the industrial environments it is placed in.
    • Coordinate cross-functional alignment on integration topics such as interfaces, behaviour, and rework cycles, to keep new materials and system revisions on schedule.

  • Hands-On System Optimisation & Validation
    • Perform iterative tuning and validation using benchtop and drop-watcher setups, including waveform tuning and high-speed jetting diagnostics.
    • Plan and run reliability and endurance testing such as circulation and life tests, duty-cycle and nozzle-reliability runs. Capture and interpret full telemetry over extended durations, and define maintenance baselines.
    • Assess and optimise print quality across both 2D and 3D contexts: drop placement, printhead-to-printhead registration, edge definition, and uniformity for 2D deposition on substrates. Layer-to-layer registration, dimensional accuracy, and surface finish for multi-layer, build-up applications. Develop diagnostic print patterns to quantify and track quality over one and multiple runs.
    • Identify and mitigate failure modes for jetting, deposition, and print quality; conduct root-cause analysis for reliability and repeatability issues.
    • Produce qualification reports and supporting documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Customer & Partner Support
    • Work directly with customers and partners during requirements definition, system setup, and process tuning.
    • Demonstrate integration and performance results during evaluations.
    • Provide technical feedback to improve usability, reliability, and serviceability of the printing system.
    • Act as a key technical liaison between Quantica's development teams and external partners.

Education & Experience

What you bring:

  • Degree in Mechatronics, Materials Science, Physics, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 5+ years of experience with precision mechatronic or fluidic systems (inkjet, dispensing, microfluidics, or additive manufacturing).
  • Proven hands-on experience with complex system tuning, instrumentation, and experimental validation.
  • Working understanding of control loops, actuation systems, and thermal/fluidic behaviour.
  • Practical experience with high-speed imaging / drop-watcher diagnostics and waveform tuning.
  • Comfortable processing and interpreting high-volume telemetry and configuring the control software around it, working alongside firmware and electronics specialists rather than owning those domains.
  • Strong data analysis and interpretation: able to turn large, noisy experimental datasets into clear conclusions and decisions, not just plots.
  • Fluency with Python or a comparable language for data handling and analysis, including the ability to build practical tooling quickly - increasingly by working effectively with AI coding assistants.
  • Strong, structured technical documentation: test protocols and SOPs, qualification reports, and traceable data.
  • Excellent proactive team working and technical leadership skills.
  • Fluency in English; German and/or Spanish language skills are a plus.

What We Value

  • Experience with printhead-based or inkjet material deposition systems.
  • Knowledge of jetting complex materials (e.g. resins, biological or functional fluids).
  • Telemetry processing and insight generation: turning large time-series datasets into actionable conclusions, using tools such as Python (pandas, NumPy, Matplotlib/Plotly) and visualisation/dashboarding platforms (e.g. Grafana).
  • Experience coordinating with external electronics or hardware vendors on integration and rework.
  • Comfort in customer-facing roles, translating technical data into clear recommendations.

What We Offer

  • A truly open-minded and supportive work environment with a high level of employee empowerment
  • Flexible working hours
  • An international environment in a diverse team
  • Competitive salary
  • Excellent location near Barcelona
  • Professional development and career advancement opportunities in a fast growing new company with unique technology
  • Working in an inspiring environment of a think tank, workshop, laboratory, collaborating with distributed colleagues
  • Free snacks, fruits, coffee and tea
